Background of the Study

Cancer diagnosis and treatment often lead to significant psychological challenges for patients. Many individuals with cancer experience anxiety, depression, and a diminished quality of life due to the emotional toll of the disease. In Gombe State, cancer patients face multiple barriers, including limited access to mental health services, which exacerbates the psychological burden of their illness. Nurses, who are integral to the healthcare team, are often in direct contact with cancer patients throughout their treatment journey and are in a prime position to provide psychological support. Nurse-led counseling has been identified as an effective intervention for improving psychological well-being, helping cancer patients cope with their diagnosis and treatment.

Despite its potential benefits, the role of nurses in providing psychological counseling to cancer patients in Gombe State remains underexplored. Nurse-led counseling can address issues such as anxiety, depression, and fear of death, which are common among cancer patients. This study aims to assess the effect of nurse-led counseling on the psychological well-being of cancer patients in Gombe State healthcare facilities, particularly in alleviating psychological distress and enhancing coping mechanisms.

Statement of the Problem

Cancer patients in Gombe State often experience psychological distress due to the challenges of living with the disease. While healthcare providers, including nurses, are often aware of these challenges, psychological counseling services are often inadequate or unavailable. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of nurse-led counseling on the psychological well-being of cancer patients, addressing the gap in mental health support in Gombe State’s healthcare facilities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in improving the psychological well-being of cancer patients in Gombe State.

  2. To assess the impact of nurse-led counseling on reducing anxiety and depression in cancer patients.

  3. To explore the feasibility of integrating nurse-led counseling into routine cancer care in Gombe State healthcare facilities.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is nurse-led counseling in improving the psychological well-being of cancer patients in Gombe State?

  2. What impact does nurse-led counseling have on anxiety and depression among cancer patients in Gombe State?

  3. How can nurse-led counseling be incorporated into the routine care of cancer patients in Gombe State healthcare facilities?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led counseling significantly improves the psychological well-being of cancer patients in Gombe State healthcare facilities.

  2. Nurse-led counseling has a significant effect on reducing anxiety and depression among cancer patients in Gombe State.

  3. Integrating nurse-led counseling into routine cancer care improves patient outcomes and mental health support in Gombe State healthcare facilities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on cancer patients receiving treatment in Gombe State healthcare facilities and the role of nurses in providing psychological counseling. Limitations include potential variability in patients' willingness to participate in counseling sessions and the availability of trained nursing staff.
